First full session with my Canon R10

18/12/2023

At last some relatively good weather and good health provided a great morning outdoors with my new Canon R10. I must admit to missing the exceptional zoom of the Lumix FZ82 as the Canon "only" came with a 18 – 150mm kit lens. However it is obvious how much more data the crop sensor collects as the ISO settings for the Canon were orders of magnitudes lower than those required by the Lumix under similar conditions. Due to the lack of reach I did have to crop my images in GIMP, but with the abundance of data this was not a problem.

Ducks gently paddling around Fewsten reservoir provided an initial test for the Canon AI autofocus. I even managed to work out how to switch targets when the auto focus was tracking an individual in a group. As a bonus some Canada geese flew past in formation giving me my first ever picture of birds in flight. Admittedly it is not in perfect focus but I counted it as a win since they were identifiable, and all in frame.

Taking up my usual position in the bushes well away from the foot path I was soon joined by three hard working grey squirrels and a friendly Robin. They were all happy to pose and appear to be ready to sign with an agent.
